TeacherSquared Teacher Educator Institute 2017: Practicing Practice
by Sona Baker
"This Institute is powerful. It provides practical, meaningful experiences that strengthen participants' skills and knowledge for immediate implementation."
- Rebecca Watts, University of Wyoming
From August 8-11, 2017, leading teacher educators gathered in Houston, TX to learn, share, collaborate, and innovate on ways to provide authentic practice opportunities for teachers. Several facilitators from various institutions led participants through sessions for four days, concluding with dedicated time for integration and implementation of learned practice methods into individual programs. Educators from across the globe connected with each other, practiced in real-time, and created concrete resources to take back to their home institutions.
"TeacherSquared is the absolute best institute you can attend if you'd like to get plugged into what teacher preparation looks like in a variety of contexts.”
- Gabby Hewitt, KIPP DC Headquarters
Participants at the Institute came from across the globe, ranging from local Houston-area programs, to international programs in the UK. There were representatives from colleges of higher education, alternative teacher certification pathways, non-profit organizations, and school districts. The diverse perspectives and voices in the room provided all participants with new ideas, strategies, and resources for improving facilitation of practice in their own programs.
“This Institute has revolutionized my thinking about the importance of embedding practice in a deliberate and systematic way. The work I've done at this Institute will impact the design of our teacher training events, and will hopefully pay dividends when we see how our teachers deliver our content and strategies to the students we support.”
- Michelle Stie-Buckles, National Math and Science Initiative
